Custom Author Hat by KC Artist Yaya.kieu
YAYA is a spunky KC artist who has grown her business over the years.
She has skills in painting, sculpting, wood burning on different materials, ex: hats, leather, bags, and more.

There are many incredible parts about her work. For me, it’s the fact that she grew from painting on canvas, to were she is now. Running a successful business doing what she loves to do. Create pieces of art on purses, canvas, hats, boots, and more.
Her creative spirit didn’t stop at the canvas. She stepped up, growing her skills, testing new material. Yaya’s story of growth as an artist over the years is inspirational to all artists. Grow, explore, get creative!
I, being an author and artist myself, can relate to her incredible talents and creative spirit that grow every year. Hats!!! I mean, look at my hat that she custom designed for me. It’s a beautiful 3d masterpiece!
Painting has become a fun hobby I play with every once in a while. Seeing the 3d puff of Yaya’s hats is what made me stop in my scrolling and hit follow. How does she get the 3d puff? No one knows. It’s her secret weapon for her artwork. You go girl!!
Plus, once I found out she lived in KC, I officially became a bigger fan of hers. Something about living only an 2 hours away from KC made Yaya feel so much more real and inspirational. (I did not find out where she lived, nor do I recommend you try. Privacy is sacred, especially when you make any type of success in your life. Please be respectful of her privacy.)

After following Yaya on her social media for a few months I knew I needed one of those gorgeous hats. I just had to have one!!
Back in 2022 that fall I was doing my first booth at a vendors market in Emporia. What better way to show off a little fun and flare than at my first vendors market.
HINT You can see how it went on my blog:
Yaya has a commission application story. Or should I say had. Now it’s changed. You can look at her lovely website and find the custom order info there.

We spoke briefly about hat size, color, and what I wanted on my hat. All on email. I told her about my books, and that I wanted this hat design to be inspired by Lily’s Guide to Releasing Antique Spirits, handwritten letters, gold sparkles, magic, and of course flowers. Yaya biggest specialty at that time back in 2022 March were her one of a kind 3d colorful flowers. Gosh even today that 3d effect makes me love my hat more and more.
A few weeks later, she was hard at work on it. Yaya gave me a few updates as she worked on it until it was completed. I received a “Your hat has been shipped” email. A few weeks later, as I used standard shipping. My exciting new hat arrived in the mail.
This custom Hat was a birthday gift to myself. I had just finished writing my second book and decided this hat would be inspired by my writings.
It took me an hour before I opened the box. Why? Because custom orders are hard for me. What if I don’t like it? What if I didn’t explain my vision to her well enough. What if the hat doesn’t fit? What if, and more.
I did a “let the expectations go” exercise and opened the box.
What A gorgeous hat! I love it. It has a touch of everything on it from my Author experience.
Nature, the bird, I love nature. A butterfly for creative whimsy. A hand painted envelope, because I write and receive paper letters to this day. And it is also a huge part of my newest book: Trunked by a Spirit.
One small detail you might miss are the lilac flowers at the bottom of the hat. I asked specifically for some lilac flowers for a special reason. My parents house, the place I grew up and love used to have lilac bushed along the long driveway. Those bushes have sadly burned up in a fire a few years back. They used to be my Mom and Dad’s favorite flower to cut and bring inside. Their aroma was intense, deep, and to this day makes me think of them. Thus, I asked for the lovely flower to be added to my hat.
My stories, Grandma’s Magic Blanket and Trunked by a Spirit, would not be here today if it weren’t for my family. They are all amazing people that have helped me become the Author/Blogger/Foodie woman I am today. It means a great deal to me to see these lovely flowers on my hat.
Yaya added soft pastel tones across the hat. The flowers are simply lovely. The sparkly gold paint she used on my hat make me smile every time the sun catches it. Sparkles!! I love a good sparkly paint. To this day, if there’s something with glitter that I can play with, I will leave a trail of glitter where ever I go. It’s fun!
To this day it hangs proudly on my wall. Where I can see it every day.
There you have it my dear readers. My custom gorgeous hat from Yaya.kieu.
She’s one incredible artist in KC. With another happy, happy customer!
10/10 for sure~
