Grandma’s Magic Blanket
The woman who inspired the creation of the Grandma.
Once apon a time, there was a little girl. This girl grew into a teenager. Then into a woman. Very quickly she gave up her single life to get married and become a wife and mother.
“Who inspired You’re first Book?” Is a question I’ve been asked before.
I call her Mom. Some caller her sister, those passed on use to call her daughter. Now she’s called Great-Grandma, or GIGI. She goes by many names.
Grandma’s Magic Blanket is a sweet short story. The thing to me that stands out is the different perspectives you see in the story. You meet the cutest baby growing inside her Mommy. You meet the Mom, herself, and Grandma.
3 women, all different ages and living different lives.
The making of Grandma
My Mom is a cornucopia of talents. She’s from the generation of stay at home Moms that literally did it all. She is a cook, baker, cleaner, seamstress, florist, crafter, money saver, Church goer you don’t mess with.
She has more talents, but for this blog we will focus on a special talent that she claims she’s no good at.
Oh Mom haha.
Seamstress.
My Mom sewed many of my dresses and skirts growing up. My favorite sewing she did was our All Saints Day costumes.
Ohhh my goodness the costumes!!! I still have a few of the dresses she sewed for me.
Mom sometimes let me pick out the pattern and fabric color. As I hit High School life I ended up asking Mom to sew me costumes for the Geography Fair and Other festivals I joined in. I loved showing off the costumes. Mom did an Amazing job on them.
Were they perfect? No, but they were beautiful, fit me, and each hold a special memory of time my Mom spent with me and making things special for me.
As an adult, I still manage to convince her to sew me a few costumes haha.
The most recent sewing masterpiece Mom made me was a Regency Era gown. It’s beautiful!
What does this have to do with my Book?
Great question!
Another special thing my Mom does is sew blankets.
Not just any blankets, special magical blankets.
Bucket list Goals
Write a Book
Go back to 2019. Cue the dream state music~
I wrote out a few pages of goals and dreams. On one of the pages I wrote, “Write a children’s book”.
On another page floating around somewhere, I also wrote “Write a book”.
I believe in the theory that if something is important to you it will keep coming up one way or another.
On these lists of goals and dreams I had travel, food, cook, bake, become wealthy, build a mansion and other things. Out of all these I narrowed in on “write a book”. It was achievable. So I set my mind on making it happen.
I happen to go visit Mom within the week or two of making the decision to write a book. I was looking for inspiration. I was talking to Mom about it briefly. Mom was doing her thing, cutting out a blanket pattern for the newest baby being born into the family.
She pinned, cut, pinned and cut. Then brought it all into the adjoined sewing room.
It’s a simple process, but time consuming.
I left the house and knew exactly what I wanted to write about. Grandma’s Magic Blanket.
It’s Perfect!!! A short, cute story.
Two weeks later, I had the entire story written and my sticky note illustrations sketched out.
My Mom, a woman with many gifts and talents, inspired my first published book. Just by doing something she enjoyed for the family she loves. Making blankets for the newest family members joining our large family.
Mom, you are an inspiration. You may not believe it, but you are.
I’m not sure I gained your skills as an Seamstress. But, I have a better understanding and greater appreciation for you and other seamstresses out there.
PS. I still have a few costumes I’d love to create with you. I can cut out the pattern to help haha. And I’ll buy you dinner. 😆💕
