Get comfy for some good reading~
We enter into the Diary of Lily Shels, a 9th grader who, as we are about to find out, is struggling with many different challenges. One of the biggest is opening up to her best friend Doris about everything she is struggling with. Being vulnerable is harder than some of us let on.

Punching the send button Doris send Mina the following text
“Mina I can’t stop thinking about Lily’s comments about me.
She called me annoying, dumb and a true blonde…does she really think that about me?”
About 30 minutes later, Doris followed through with Mina’s advice. She looked through of few of her own diary’s to see if there was ever a time when she wrote anything mean or nasty about Lily.
Ok, fine I said a few means things about Lily too, but seriously she never told me I was being annoying when I talked for hours about Derek…or my annoying brothers. You know she does the same thing about her brothers too!!! Doris felt the urge to punch something. Her pillows were looking limper than usual due to her constant use of them as punching bags.
Her phone buzzed a few times catching Dori’s attention. Mina texted back.
Mina’s text: “Hey Doris, honey, let’s be real here, we all have good and bad days.
Our best friends and those closest to us can tick us off too.
No ones perfect or free of being able to annoy others.
I say, finish the diary’s and if you still feel angry or upset with what Lily said in the diary
about you then why don’t you ask her if she still feels that way.”
Doris’s mouth dropped open in surprise. “Ask her?? Yeah like I’m going to ask my best friend: “Hey do you really think I’m an annoying, whiny, and blonde dumb dumb???” Like seriously who would ask their friends questions like that? No way! That’s just asking for trouble and more hurt feelings. Doris shook her head and replied.
Doris: “Isn’t there another way?
I really don’t think asking her is going to be a good idea.
If she says no, she’s lying. If she says yes. Then what?
I’m just supposed to take it and walk away like no problem?”
Burning a hole in her rug with her quick pacing, Doris impatiently waited for Mina to reply.
Mina’s text: “I would simply bring it to her attention that you read those comments
and felt hurt or troubled by them. You’re best friends.
Maybe if you two talked about this but from both sides,
you both can learn a little bit about each other.”
Doris stared at the reply. Not sure how to respond since she really had no intention of listening. Telling Lily that I’m offended by her comments just sounds like a petty thing now. The phone buzzed.
Mina’s text: “Finish reading all the diary’s and we can talk at the end.
Mark or write down any questions you have for later. I’ll explain my reasoning later.
Doris’s text: Ok I can do that. Thanks Mina.
Lily’s Diary
Dear Diary,
Let’s talk about your feelings:
If I hear the name Derek again I’m going to scream!!! Doris just doesn’t shut up!
What happened today:
During school today I was being tormented by Isaac and his constant fears building up. I used to feel sorry for him but today I just want him to shut up.
Then Doris comes over and starts going on and on about Derek this, Derek that-Derek Derek Derek…
I think she finally got the hint when I sighed and told her that I needed to use the bathroom. I was done and spent the next 5 minutes in the bathroom during lunch. When I came back Doris was frowning and we finished our lunch in silence.
During our 5 minute class change breaks she just ignored me. I guess I ticked her off too. I kind of feel bad for making her mad but, really she could take a hint and stop being so annoying always talking about Derek 24/7. The last thing I need right now is dull boring Derek talk. I’m just sick of it.
I’m done. Short log in the diary tonight, pluggin in headphones and letting the world move on without me for a few moments…unless Isaac has anything to say about it. Le sighhhhhh
Grateful for: bedrooms with no one but me in it…and headphones and music.
Night
~Lily
