We enter into the Diary of Lily Shels, a 9th grader who, as we are about to find out, is struggling with many different challenges. One of the biggest is opening up to her best friend Doris about everything she is struggling with. Being vulnerable is harder than some of us let on.

“Something’s not right.”
Doris flipped back between the two diary entries. Lily’s 3rd diary was off, unlike the first two, this one started having more and larger skips in-between dates. There was almost a 3 week gap between these two entries. It has been the largest gap so far. As Doris read on she’s noticed that instead of the diary/journal habit getting stronger, Lily is skipping more days. If dairy 3 has multiple gaps, Doris pulled out the last diary from her bedside table drawer, how many will this last diary have?
She skimmed through a few of the pages specifically checking the dates. Within the first 10 pages there was 2 day gap already. A few blank pages caught Doris’ eye as she glanced through.
“Looks like this diary might be a short read. With all these blank pages.”
Doris tossed the diary to the side of her. Her thoughts preoccupied with a new question. Habits, Doris looked up on her phone: How does it take for a habit to form?
Her search showed that it takes anywhere from 18 to over 200 days for a habit to form.
“I probably should have known that, since Dad makes us learn all about this type of stuff for sports and health.” The diary to her side looking brand new, barely used. “Lily must have stopped writing her diary before the habit formed enough to become automatic.” She shrugged before placing the diary back into her drawer. That diary is the last one, with a few blank pages and page skips already apparent to Doris, it made her wonder, what important piece of information is hiding in between the pages. Will Doris read what happened that dark day last semester?
The clock at her bedside glowed as the evening darkened. Almost 10 pm. Doris laid back on her soft pillows. She’ll finish the third diary tonight and finish the last diary tomorrow. The weekend is two days away. Doris planned out her weekend. Lily and her can meet up at the park since it’ll be nice out. There’s a quiet, private spot in the park near a bunch of corn fields that they can go to to avoid crowds of park goers.
She texted her plan to Lily. Within a few minutes the entire weekend was planned out. Doris will spend the night at Lily’s and they will talk about it all.
Doris picked up the diary, continuing to read. She thought she would feel better knowing that she was finally going to get to hear what happened that day. Her foot twitched the more she thought about it. Will this change anything about their friendship? What if Lily did something bad? The thought had never occurred to Doris. She always thought, poor Lily, something bad must happened to her. But what if it’s the opposite??
Doris’ thoughts plagued her until she was called downstairs for the evening prayers.
Until she fell asleep Doris continued to wonder and worry. What if I find out something bad?
